Steve Archambault today announced his plans to run for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General.
Steve Archambault said, "I am running for Attorney General because Rhode Islanders need someone in the state's top law enforcement job who is on their side. The Attorney General's office is charged with advocating for and representing the people of our state, and that is exactly what I intend to do."
Archambault went on to say, "I'll diligently prosecute the criminals who threaten our safety and I'll stand up for Rhode Island consumers. If credit card companies, mortgage companies, utility companies or big hospital systems step over the line, I'll be there to keep them in check."
Archambault, who serves as a Councilman in Smithfield , would bring a broad legal background to the Attorney General's office. His experience as a police officer, local Prosecutor and defense attorney gives him a , first-hand understanding of all the major elements of the criminal justice system.
As Council President in Smithfield, Archambault spearheaded creative reforms, including the formation of a bipartisan Charter Review Board which, on his recommendation, put in place a Personnel Board to ensure that city employees were selected on merit. He also created a Financial Review Board to enable people with extensive financial expertise to review the town budget. This innovative idea is designed to promote fiscal responsibility and sound budget practices.
Steve Archambault went to law school at night while holding down a job as a police officer during the day. Archambault served as a Police officer in Jamestown for 5 years. Archambault said, "My experience as a police officer will better enable me to work with state and local police to set priorities so that resources are dedicated to the biggest threats to public safety and to ensure that cases are sound and brought efficiently."
He is a lifelong Rhode Islander who grew up on a dairy farm in Smithfield.
Archaumbault plans an aggressive campaign, beginning with introducing himself to Rhode Islanders in all corners of the state. He will be unveiling specific plans and proposals as the campaign unfolds.
A kick-off fundraiser will be held at Twelve Acres in Smithfield on June 2 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM . Archambault's formal announcement of his candidacy will be held in January, 2010.
