ARCHAMBAULT, ATTORNEY GENERALA Smithfield Democrat who wants to be the state’s next attorney general unveiled a “four-point” plan Monday that calls for the state to take a tougher stance against drunken drivers. Stephen R. Archambault, a Smithfield Town Council member, says that if he is elected as attorney general he will push for new laws that:
- Make it a felony, with penalties of up to four years in prison, to drive under the influence with a child 15 or younger in the vehicle. Prison terms would be significantly longer if a child is injured or killed.
- Require an interlock device to be installed in a driver’s vehicle after a first offense if the driver’s blood-alcohol content is .15 or above and require that such devices be installed after all second offenses.
- Require mandatory alcohol and drug counseling classes for drivers found to be using drugs or alcohol while driving recklessly.
- Archambault says he would also work with the state police and local police departments to provide better training for officers, to help them identify people who are driving under the influence of drugs.
