Read Steve's Letter in the Valley Breeze on rate hikes proposed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of RI

From the Valley Breeze:

Health insurers need to keep costs in line

Last week I called for a new emphasis on cutting administrative costs and sounded my opposition to rate hikes proposed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of R.I., United Health Care of New England and Tufts Health Plan for small and large group employers.

These proposed double digit rate hikes pose a serious potential economic hardship to more than 300,000 Rhode Islanders. Rhode Island families and businesses are already squeezed as our state faces the most difficult economic situation in at least a generation.

ARCHAMBAULT, ATTORNEY GENERAL

A Smithfield Democrat who wants to be the state’s next attorney general unveiled a “four-point” plan Monday that calls for the state to take a tougher stance against drunken drivers. Stephen R. Archambault, a Smithfield Town Council member, says that if he is elected as attorney general he will push for new laws that:

  • Make it a felony, with penalties of up to four years in prison, to drive under the influence with a child 15 or younger in the vehicle. Prison terms would be significantly longer if a child is injured or killed.
  • Require an interlock device to be installed in a driver’s vehicle after a first offense if the driver’s blood-alcohol content is .15 or above and require that such devices be installed after all second offenses.
  • Require mandatory alcohol and drug counseling classes for drivers found to be using drugs or alcohol while driving recklessly.
  • Archambault says he would also work with the state police and local police departments to provide better training for officers, to help them identify people who are driving under the influence of drugs.
